A cleansing meeting place

A cleansing meeting place

The word ‘hamam’ means ‘murmur’. This might sound like a strange name for public baths, but it actually explains a great deal. The traditional Turkish baths were a place where people came to meet, talk and share ideas. In other words, this was a social arena just as much as a place for bodily cleansing, with ancient roots.
Originally, the tradition came from the Roman Empire, but there the baths fell into disrepute after the arrival of Christianity. However, the tradition remained in what subsequently became the Ottoman Empire and eventually Turkey. And it lives on to this day. Upper House is home to Gothenburg’s first hamam, where tradition meets modernity. Come and try out our version of the ancient hamam.
